A Swarm of Nano Quadrotors

A Swarm of Nano Quadrotors

I want to attach an efficient solar panel to them so they’ll run forever, configure them in a banner formation saying “ALL YOUR BASE NOW BELONG TO PAX” about 2 meters tall and link them into google maps. Im going to box them up and mail them to random addresses around the world, and as soon as the package is opened at the other end, and light hits them, these fuckers will spring to life and spend the rest of time spreading my message around city streets.

Interesting looking Indie game, Overgrowth.

Has a very realistic damage model, parkour, combat, 3d platforming. IT’d be nice to see it as a finished game, looks cool.

I have no use for this, but it’s a really cool toy I’d like to use/test the accuracy of.

WH40K: Space Marine

Space Marine
Ok, where to start?
Website

You’re well aware of the venerated Warhammer 40k universe. This game, which is available on pretty much every platform, is a 3rd person shooter which puts you squarely in the boots of a 8 foot tall Space Marine. The Captain of a squad of Ultramarines to be exact. Orks have invaded a planet where Titans are manufactured, and you’re tasked with stopping the invasion and preventing the dismantlement or theft of the Titan.

Gameplay consists of you being able to run and gun, and switch to melee combat seamlessly. You can mow down waves of Orks with a bolter, then leap into the fray with a chainsword and send your foes flying, not always in one piece. There’s a wide variety of weaponry, both ranged and melee available. You can carry upto 4 ranged weapons, and only 1 melee weapon.

Ranged weaponry consists of all the old weaponry you’ll know of, with perhaps a few new ones. You begin the game with a bolter pistol, which has unlimited ammo and little stopping power. It’s aim isn’t so great, considering you fire it left handed. You can find a upgrade to this in form of a plasma pistol. One handed, unlimited ammunition (but it needs to have the hot gasses vented to prevent overheating) Aside from the dedicated sniper/marksman weapons, almost every single gun has a lot more scatter than you’ll be used to. You can then carry a bolter, which is the 2 handed, heavier variation of the bolter pistol. This thing mows down Orks like it’s nobodies business, and it’s a wonderfully satisfying weapon to use. Once you get it, this thing can server you faithfully the rest of the game without problem. You can find 2 extra upgraded variants of this gun. Next is the stalker bolter. A sniper version of the bolter. There’s also heavy bolter emplacements, which you can either man or rip from its tripod to carry around with you. My favourite gun without question. There’s also a melta gun (flamer-thrower), las-cannon (heavy sniper rifle) plasma gun (unlim ammo, ignore armour, chargeable) and the new one I’ve never heard of, an experimental grenade launcher called the Vengeance Launcher. You can lob upto 5 of the things at a time, then destruct them at your leisure. I used this little, as I found it clumsy to detonate in a hurry, but it’s power was undeniable.

Melee weapons are the combat knife you start with, which you’ll discard and never use again as soon as you receive your 1st chainsword. There’s also a Power Axe, which is slower to swing, but stronger, and then the massive Thunder Hammer, a huge 2 handed maul of annihilation to anything within 3 metres of you. The chainsword (and all melee weapons) can have their attacks chained for extra damage. You also have the ability to END these combos with a stun mechanic. For example, if you strike once, then stun, you’ll stun one opponent. If you strike twice, then stun, you’ll stun in a wave in front of you. If you strike 3 times then stun, you’ll knock back all opponents around you. Once you’ve stunned an opponent, you can execute them with a button, which gives you a slow-motion cinematic of you systematically eviscerating your opponent. Executing opponents give you back health, so you can take on shitloads of enemies all at once, stun them all, execute one when your healths getting down, then continue back at full health. The stun/execute mechanic works really well, letting you stay in the action pounding away at your enemies until they’re all dead. There’s a shitload of execution animations, so it doesn’t get boring anytime soon. Pro-tip when fighting Nobs or Chaos Champions, when you stun them and go in for the execute, you then have to overpower them by mashing the LMB to actually execute them. It’s daunting and confusing as fuck the 1st time you face off against these larger foes, as a failed execute ends up with you being pounded, but quickly becomes second nature to fuck them up.

There’s a lot of debris littered throughout the levels, but this isn’t a cover based shooter. You’re a fucking space marine, and never retreat or fall back. You really feel a bad-ass playing this game. All the guns sound meaty, and feel tough to use, and the ground shakes when you sprint around, as your 8 foot tall frame is encased in near-impervious armour. Occasionally you’ll get the opportunity to don a jump-pack, which allows you to leap huge distances around the battlefield, before divebombing down amongst the filthy xenos. The assault jump-pack paired with the gigantic Thunder Hammer melee weapon is brutal and almost unassailable. The worst thing about this pairing is when the Captain unclips the assault pack and goes “out of fuel” when you reach a zone where the assault pack would be more detriment than help. I hated every single time he discarded the jump pack. It’s a truly cathartic experience.

The storyline is a pretty decent one actually. Pretty standard 40k universe lore, there won’t be many surprises for fans of the mythos. But there’s PLENTY of background and backstory that you get just from clanking around the levels of the manufactorium, from the posters around, to the big-brother style de-”motivational” automated vocal announcements given out over loud-speakers from time to time.

The multiplayer is great, chaos vs space marines, with 2 game modes. Annihilation and Seize Control. Annihilation is deathmatch, and SC is capture and hold points until the enemies tickets run out. You can use all the same weapons and loadouts as the singleplayer, with levelling up unlocking all the weapons, perks and armour sets you can decorate your dude with. Since the inaccuracy of the weapons carries over into multiplayer, a lot of combat is mid to close ranged, with only the las-cannon or stalker bolter equipped marines able to effectively engage at long range. The assault class, with jetpack and big melee weapons, using a “death-from-above” charge mechanic is a HUGE hoot to play. Fragile, but very mobile and packing a huge punch.

Now it comes at a steep price on steam at the moment, $89, but I personally LOVED every minute of this game, and now I’m sinking time into the multiplayer when I get onto a decent internet connection. I’m very close to rating this game like 8/10 or 9/10.

Highly highly recommended for fans of Warhammer 40k. I’m buying it for both my brothers when I have a spare $170 to waste on them. They’re dead keen to get it too, which is telling, since all three of us never agree on anything.

Give us money.
